Due to amendments being made to the regulations, the leasing of uninhabited islands has been temporarily halted.

The Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources, and Agriculture on Wednesday issued a notice announcing amendments to the Uninhabited Islands Act, which governs the lease of islands in the Maldives. Therefore, under Section 11 of the Act, the acceptance of applications for the lease of uninhabited islands has been temporarily suspended.

The agriculture ministry was unavailable for comment; therefore, it is not known what changes to the regulations will be made.

The guidelines for leasing uninhabited islands were amended last year as well. It extended the lease period of an island by an additional 10 years. The maximum lease term for an island was five years when the law went into effect in 2020.

The amendments brought to the Act last year also prohibited leaseholders from re-leasing, renting, and commissioning supervision and maintenance work to third parties.
