Club Eagles captain Ahmed Rizwan (Rizey) has been named Best Footballer of the Year at the Maldives Sports Awards.

The 29-year-old forward from Kaafu atoll Dhiffushi claimed the title, competing against Hamza Mohamed (Hampu) and Aisam Ibrahim (Tony) of the national football team and Maziya. Hamza had won the Player of the Year award during the previous two years.

Rizwan, who was named FAM’s Most Promising Player in 2016, has been setting records at club level. He scored goals in all three tournaments held during the last football season, scoring goals in all three tournaments played,

Except for the President’s Cup final, he scored three goals in three matches and 23 goals in 12 games, only missing a goal in the last league match against Maziya.

Rizwan also scored in the AFC Cup qualifier and finished the season with 27 goals in 18 matches for Club Eagles. He also became the first player to reach 100 goals in the Dhivehi Premier League last season, scoring in 12 consecutive matches.

For the second consecutive year, the Best Female Football Player award was not presented. During the first year of the Maldives Sports Awards in 2022, the national team goalkeeper Aminath Leeza (Lizzy) won the Best Female Player award.
