Hankede Bridge in Addu City will be opened to the public this Saturday, the Ministry of Construction said today.
In a post on X, the ministry stated that the Detour Link Road constructed under a line of credit facility from India's Exim Bank will be opened on Saturday.
The bridge, which connects Gaukedi and Maradhoo, had faced significant delays despite the contractor reportedly completing all necessary work.
Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar had repeatedly voiced concerns over the prolonged delay, stating there was no reason for the Bridge to stay closed.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Mayor Nizar reiterated his calls for the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure to expedite the opening, reconstruct the deteriorated link road, and repair the temporary sand road in the Hankede area, all of which are part of the Addu road construction project.
Earlier, the government had announced plans to open the bridge in July last year.
The project, initiated in 2021 under the Indian Exim Bank's line of credit, includes flood protection and road development across all islands in Addu City. Awarded at a cost of USD 77.6 million (MVR 1.1 billion), it was scheduled for completion within two years.
