The allegations against the First Family has been condemned by several, including the Speaker.
Parliamentary Speaker Abdul Rahman Abdulla yesterday called for action to be taken against those responsible for slandering President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's son during the nightly protests organised by the opposition party.
The remarks were made by MDP's senior activist Mariyam Zubair, with videos of her comments making rounds on the social media scene.
Regarding the matter, Abdul Raheem said the rights of innocent children are being violated due to personal jealousy and political rivalry.
He also called on the relevant institutions to take the strictest action against those who are defaming the children and making false accusations against them.
“When such uncivilised degradation is committed within the activities of political parties, the parent body of the parties should not be satisfied with a mere statement of condemnation and there should be a mechanism to prevent such incidents from happening again,” he said.
The Election Commission also condemned Mariyam's remarks.
The statement said that no one should speak in a manner that detracts from the dignity and reputation of a child, even in the name of free speech.
The commission said it would always welcome political activities within the limits of laws and regulations and reminded the parties that they are allowed to conduct political activities within the provisions of the Constitution as well as the Political Party Act and other laws or regulations applicable.
However, MDP issued a statement yesterday defending Mariyam's remarks, saying they were not directed at a child or degrading to a child's dignity.
