The Islamic Ministry announced on Wednesday that so far more than 100,000 households have received their share of the 50 tons of dates gifted by the Saudi Arabian government for the upcoming Ramadan.

The ministry said that the distribution of dates allocated for the Greater Malé area, which began on the 20th of last month, has now been completed.

According to the ministry, 11,375 packets of dates were distributed to 46,251 households in the Greater Malé area. Some 10,788 packets were also issued to the local councils to disburse them to 56,461 households in other islands, it was detailed.

As such, a total of 22,163 packets of dates have been distributed so far, the ministry said.

Although 19 associations have requested dates, none have been distributed to any associations yet, the ministry added.

The Islamic Ministry had previously said that dates would be distributed to residential households on a first-come, first-served basis, with one packet per household in cities and islands.

From this batch of dates received by the Maldives, there are 25 packets available for every 100 households.

According to the calendar, Ramadan is set to begin on March 1st this year.
