Due to forecasts of severe weather conditions in the Maldives in the coming days, police, Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), and other relevant agencies have jointly launched an operation today to protect against potential damage from heavy rains.
Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon speaking with Mihaaru News said that this joint operation is being launched nationwide under the initiative of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to minimize damage from heavy rainfall.
"We will conduct a joint operation involving the police, MNDF, and NDMA," said Ghassan.
Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has forecasted that the current low-pressure system in the Maldives region will persist for six days, bringing strong winds and rough seas. They have also warned about possible sea surges affecting some islands in the northern and central Maldives.
As weather conditions are expected to worsen across much of the Maldives starting today, NDMA has also urged taking safety precautions.
Earlier this month, Maldives experienced severe weather conditions as well. Heavy rainfall caused severe flooding in Male' and other islands, resulting in significant damage.
Male' experienced heavy rainfall on January 3, leading to flooding in many streets and significant damage to properties and homes. According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the damage caused by the rainfall amounted to MVR 2.2 million, marking it as the most damaging rainfall event in Male' to date.
