Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has opened nominations for a vacant Supreme Court seat, with submissions accepted through the portal until 11:00 am on Wednesday.

The vacancy follows the resignation of Judge Husnu Su’ood on March 4, alleging government influence over the judiciary.

To qualify for the position, candidates must be at least 30 years old and hold a first degree in Islamic Sharia, law, or both. Additionally, they must have at least seven years of experience as a judge, lawyer, or both.

The Supreme Court bench currently consists of Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan and judges Dr Azmiralda Zahir, Ali Mahaz Zahir, Aisha Shujoon Mohamed, Ali Rasheed Hussain, and Dr Mohamed Ibrahim.

Su’ood was among three judges suspended by the JSC shortly before the Supreme Court was set to hear a petition challenging a constitutional amendment that strips MPs of their seats if they defect or are expelled from their party. Judges Dr Azmiralda Zahir and Mahaz Ali Zahir were also suspended, which has thrown the trials in a limbo.
