Bank of Maldives’ (BML) said on Sunday that their cards cannot be used in Russia anymore due to sanctions imposed on Russia by SWIFT and card networks around the world.
Countries around the world are placing economic sanctions on Russia in response to its attack on Ukraine. This has impacted payment systems on a global scale as well.
BML cards cannot be used in other regions where these sanctions are in place, BML said, resulting in their merchants not receiving money for any transactions conducted in these regions. Russian tourists in Maldives cannot use these cards at the moment either.
The changes in the global payment system will be affecting Maldivians and how they send money abroad as well. BML said delays may be faced while sending money over Telegraphic Transfer (TT), and in some situations, TT may not be possible at all.
