Habeeb has stepped down from his position as a member of the Elections Commission following the end of his two five-year terms serving as a member in addition to his employment at the commission prior to his membership.
Vice Chairman of Elections Commission, Ismail Habeeb has resigned from the Commission after 21 years of service to the institution.
He had stepped down from his role at EC following the conclusion of his second term as a member of the Commission. Habeeb has fulfilled two five-year terms of service to the Commission while the regulation stipulates two terms as the maximum servable by a member of the Commission.
Habeeb was initially elected as a member of the Elections Commission on March 13, 2013 during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen. After the end of his first term, he was elected for a second term in the year 2019.
Habeeb had contributed greatly to the Commission through his position as an employee at the Elections Commission office even prior to his appointment as a member.
Addressing the end of his term on social media platform, X, he maintained that his time serving the people of the country will be an enduring experience.
He had further expressed gratitude to employees of the Elections Commission, institutions, journalists as well as political parties for the support and endorsement they had offered him during his tenure.
Secretary General of the Commission, Hassan Zakariyya has been nominated to replace Habeeb's membership in the Commission and an appeal for his approval has been delivered to the parliament.
