Export of canned tuna has decreased by 57 percent last year.

As per statistics published by the central bank, Maldives Monetary Authority, 4,800 metric tonnes of canned tuna were exported last year by November. The same period the previous year saw exports of 11,100 metric tonnes.

While export of canned tuna has decreased, one of the leading companies in the industry, Ensis, has shut down its factory and stopped purchasing fish last year. This is believed to be one of the reasons for the decrease.

Total fish exports last year have also decreased by 48 percent compared to the previous year. As of November last year, 36,000 metric tonnes of fish had been exposed while figures in the same period the previous year are at 69,000 metric tonnes.

The highest exports last year were in frozen and chilled fish. This comes up to 29,000 metric tonnes by November.

Highest exports were recorded in February of last year, at 6,000 metric tonnes of fish. The lowest amount of exports was recorded in July with just 1000 metric tonnes.
