Work has commenced on Tuesday on the construction of the cat shelter and facility in Hulhumale' (Farukolhufushi) which will house the stray cats populating the streets of the Greater Male' region.

A special ceremony was held at the location of the shelter on Tuesday morning to mark the commencement of work on the project. Male' Mayor Adam Azim, as well as State Minister of Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Mariyam Vishama attended the ceremony.
Azim stated that the initial process will be on fencing the area, which would be completed within a period of approximately twenty days. Actual construction will be commenced within the coming week, according to the Mayor.
He announced that all the technical support necessary for the work is being provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare.
"My hope is that this facility will be constructed within the coming one or two months, and all the stray cats in Male' will be transferred here, neutered and provided shelter here," he said.
Housing Development Corporation has given Male' City Council a land area of 5000 square feet in Hulhumale Phase 2, Farukolhufushi area for the establishment of this facility.
