Former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel will contest for the Villimale' constituency in the Parliamentary Election next year.

In a tweet, the veteran politician vowed to bring about modern development to Villimale', saying that progress has been greatly delayed for the people of the suburb.

Speaking to local media Mihaaru on Saturday, Jameel stated that he was interested in the parliament in order to fulfill the electoral pledges of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and to work closely with citizens in the political arena.

He proclaimed that the foundation for the current coalition government was laid by the earlier political movement, Maldives United Opposition (MUO), which he had led. Stating that the now ruling alliance is the result of three years' of hard work, Jameel stressed the importance of realising the new government's vows.

Shedding light on developing Villimale, Jameel revealed his vision of connecting Villimale' to capital Male' City and landfill island Thilafushi via bridge, and establishing a state-of-the-art terminal in the island.

Jameel went on to assert that, as a parliamentarian, he would protect and defend the rights of the people.

Currently the adviser to Jumhooree Party's leader Qasim Ibrahim, Jameel was the first vice president of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration. He fled to the United Kingdom soon after his impeachment, where he lived in self-exile until Yameen's fall in the Presidential Election this year. Prior to his return, Jameel had shifted allegiance from the now main opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) to Jumhooree Party.

He had served as the justice minister and Chief Judge of the Criminal Court in the administration of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, as the communications minister of former President Mohamed Nasheed, and as the home minister in the government of former President Mohamed Waheed.
