Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Infrastructure has assured that there is no undue influence being exerted on the ongoing efforts to re-evaluate the list of recipients of the 4000 flats under the 'Gedhoruveriya' housing scheme.

It was earlier announced that the list of recipients of flats under this housing scheme introduced by the previous government would be reviewed and republished by the end of last month. Later, the date was pushed to the end of the first two weeks of November, which also remained unmet. In the end, it was announced that the announcement of the final list of recipients has now been indefinitely postponed.

In a statement issued last night, the ministry rejected the rumours circulating that parliament members and political leaders held influence over deciding the final list of recipients.

"We assure you that no persons can exert influence on the re-evaluation being conducted under this scheme," they stated.

The Ministry said that efforts are being made to ensure that the flats go to those most deserving of housing.

They said that as 20,697 applications need to be reviewed and reconfirmed, this takes times for proper conclusion.

The previous government had said that of these 20,697 applications, 18,167 applicants were eligible for the 4000 flats.

However, a subsequent investigation by Anti Corruption Commission found that 60 percent of the named recipients were wrongly awarded flats. Hence, the commission at the time ordered the Ministry to review the list.
