The Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture has awarded Fenaka Corporation the contract to install ice plants on five local islands.

The agreement was signed by Director General of the Ministry Ahmed Yameen and Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation Ahmed Saeed.

The 25-ton ice plants, developed under the Saudi Fund, will be installed in Haa Alifu atoll Dhihdhoo, Alifu Alifu atoll Rasdhoo, Dhaalu atoll Meedhoo, Laamu Atoll Maamendhoo and Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Rathafandhoo.

The contract was given to Fenaka Corporation to expedite and complete the project within eight months

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister of Fisheries Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan said that he was confident that Fenaka Corporation will complete the project within the contracted period. He also stated that ice plants have already been installed and operational on several other islands as part of the current administration's pledge. Minister Hussain further added that once installation of ice plants in these five islands are complete, the government's pledge will be fulfilled.

Several local fishers have previously complained about the lack of availability of ice to store their fresh catch, leading to protests in some instances.
