In their investigation into allegedly forged documents being submitted regarding land plots issued under the Binveriya housing scheme, Police have said that the recipients claim they were issued these documents by the Housing Ministry under the previous government.
In a press conference held last night, Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdulla Shareef said that as of now, issues have been found in three separate land plots.
Some of these land plots have more than one person submitting documents claiming ownership of them, he said.
"What we have found so far is all these people had not applied for land under the scheme, nor meet the necessary requirements to be eligible for land," he said.
Shareef said that as of now, six persons had been questioned in relation to the case. They said that the documents had been issued to them by the previous government's Housing Ministry stating that land plots had been allocated to them after they had raised concerns regarding their ineligibility and met with Ministry senior officials.
One of the people questioned said that he had met with former State Minister at Housing Ministry Akram Kamaluddeen.
Shareef said that Police are now working to verify the authenticity of these documents.
HDC MD Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed's brother, Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed, is also amongst those who submitted false documentation. Police said that he, too, has been questioned.
Police said that there are no charges against Fazul at the time being.
