Nigerian man passes away while in custody at Maafushi Prison

Maldives Correctional Service identified the deceased as Emmanuel John Paul Okonachi, aged 35.

A Nigerian man has passed away while being held in Maafushi Prison pending trial.

Maldives Correctional Service identified the deceased as Emmanuel John Paul Okonachi, aged 35.

He was taken to the prison's medical center for treatment after he fell while playing with other inmates in the prison yard. Within four minutes, he was transferred to Maafushi Hospital, where he passed away at 5:20 p.m.

Okonachi was being held in custody on charges of possession, use, and trafficking of drugs in Maldives.

Authorities confirmed that he was not receiving treatment for any chronic illness.

The Inspector of Correctional Service, Maldives Police Service, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, National Integrity Commission, and the Prosecutor General’s Office have been informed of his death.
