Autopsy reports on Mary Grace, a possible homicide victim, has revealed presence of a lethal injection dose that had been discovered at the alleged perpetrator, Haleemath Lamha's residence.
Previously, the state had alleged that Lamha, who had been arrested alongside Grace's husband, Marvin Vargas, was his lover.
The Filipino couple and Lamha were registered nurses working at the Indira Gandi Memorial Hospital.
The state is pressing charges of first-degree murder on Vargas while Lamha is charged with aiding and abetting murder along with two more charges.
State prosecutor, during the most recent court hearing that proceeded online, stated that Grace's toxicology report had been concluded.
The report indicated the presence of succinylcholine - a powerful skeletal muscle relaxant - was discovered in Grace's bloodstream. Succinylcholine is an adjacent to general anesthesia to facilitate tracheal intubation and provide skeletal muscle relaxation during surgery and mechanical ventilation.
Other chemicals discovered from Lamha's residence include Potassium-chloride and Propofol; both if administered in high dosages can prove fatal.
The alleged culprit, Lamha, who had joined from Maafushi penitentiary maintained silent posture throughout the run of the hearing.
The state prosecutor had further argued that the vial containing succinylcholine generally holds 10 milli-liters of the fluid, however at the time of the discovery only 4 milli-liters were salvaged within the bottle.
In addition to this, the state prosecutor had further claimed that Grace's body showed signs of injection administration.
Furthermore, the prosecutor had highlighted that all the chemicals discovered from Lamha's residence were precisely used for anesthetic purposes and if administered in high dosages or abused then can be 'weaponized' against any individual, a medical fact that according to the prosecutor had been corroborated by a doctor employed at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
Due to the discovery of chemicals from Lamha's residence, which can only be discharged from a medical venue through acquired permission, the alleged culprit is also charged with breach of conduct - acting without acquiring permission - and breach of property; both charges carry a general sentence of two months and 12 days each.
The state had previously alleged that Lamha had instructed Vargas on the method of administering the injection, which the duo communicated via a text messages. Moreover, the state had attested to presenting the related evidence to the trial as well.
Following the preliminary hearing, Lamha is currently proceeding through remand hearing for which her lawyers in the defense had requested from the court for discretion.
Defense attorneys claimed that the request of discretion pertains to personal information related to Lamha's health which will be discussed at the hearing.
However, the sitting judge Hussain Faiz Rashaad had rejected the request and continued the proceeding without discretion to the public.
Though the state's argument strongly attempted to implicate Lamha, as a threat to the community, furthering their stance claiming on sufficient proof, the defense had countered stating the state failed to present enough evidence or proof to support their claims.
Upon hearing arguments made from both ends, the sitting judge decided on keeping the alleged nurse on remand until the culmination of the trial.
