Inspector of Police Tholhath Mohamed said at a press conference that 433 motorcycles and 33 four-wheelers, which had been parked on Male' roads for an extended period, were cleared from various locations.
Police have removed more than 400 vehicles from congested areas in Malé City as part of efforts to ease traffic and improve road safety during Ramadan.
Inspector of Police Tholhath Mohamed said at a press conference that 433 motorcycles and 33 four-wheelers, which had been parked on Male' roads for an extended period, were cleared from various locations.
Additionally, new traffic signs have been drawn in areas where they were previously missing.
To manage congestion, additional police officers have been deployed to monitor high-traffic areas, such as the local market. Motorcycle parking zones will also be designated to facilitate foot traffic in market area.
As part of traffic control measures, police have banned four-wheeler parking from North Harbor to Chandhanee Magu during the day.
Four-wheelers will not be allowed near 22 mosques 10 minutes before and after prayer times until the area is clear. Police have advised people to walk to nearby mosques and park their motorcycles in designated areas to avoid disruption.
Tholhath noted that traffic accidents were most frequent in four locations during Ramadan in previous years including Maafannu Westpark, Gaadhoo Building, Tascaloosa Point (Bridge View Point), and Izzuddin Magu.
He urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly in these areas.
Inspector of Police Ibrahim Halil, speaking from Hulhumale' 1 Police Station, said that crime prevention efforts would be intensified based on trends from 2022, 2023, and 2024.
Motorcycle theft, theft of items from under motorcycle seats, and theft of goods left outside shops and electronics during prayer times are common during Ramadan.
Police identified four crime prone areas in Hulhumale' Phase 1 including Lakudi Jetty, Kanneli Jetty, the track area, and flats 1-5.Thefts and robberies tend to increase between Maghrib and Tarawih prayers when fewer people are outside, he said.
Inspector of Police Ismail Rafiu added that vehicles parked on Nirolhu Magu have been removed, clearing a significant portion of the area.
Parking arrangements have been made in collaboration with HDC.
