Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has said today that installation of additional elevators in four of the Hiyaa Towers will be completed within the next two months.
An HDC Media Official said that efforts are underway to place additional lifts in all sixteen towers. Foundation for the lifts have been laid in all towers, with work on installation ongoing.
It has been a persistent complaint amongst Hiyaa Tower residents that the low number of lifts in each 25 storey tower lead to inconveniences in accessing the upper floors. To address this, installation of additional lifts at the towers were contracted to China's Shenyang Yuanda Intellectual Industry Group Co., Ltd in February last year.
The HDC Media Official said that the first four towers in which lift installation will be completed are towers H1 to H4. Two lifts will be installed in each tower. He assured that this work would be completed before the end of April.
No date of completion for installation of lifts at the remaining towers has been announced yet.
Former HDC Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed has earlier said that installation of the additional 32 lifts will cost USD 18 million (MVR 278 million).
One of the the lifts in each tower will have the capacity to carry stretchers, with the remaining being of 14 people capacity.
Most Hiyaa Towers have three lifts installed in them, with a few having four. However, residents say that this is not enough to cater to the approximately 40,000 people residing there.
