Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Managing Director Fazul Rasheed stated that it is challenging for the company to allocate commercial land to the Male' City Council in order to begin municipal services in Hulhumale'.

This follows the government's decision to transfer the municipal functions of Hulhumale' to the Male' City Council, which was announced by President Dr Muizzu on December 31 last year.

However, municipal services have not yet been initiated by the City Council.

In a joint press conference with Male' City Council, Fazul acknowledged the difficulties in implementing these services, despite it being a legal mandate for the City Council.

He emphasized the importance of completing the legal procedures for the transfer of municipal services.

Guidelines for the provision of public services and employee transfers have been shared with the council, he said, and assured that the council would not be obstructed in fulfilling its responsibilities.

One of the main challenges for the City Council in starting municipal services is financial difficulties.

To help resolve this issue, Fazul said that the council would be given responsibility for managing the fish market in Hulhumale'.

"We plan to transfer the management of areas used for municipal services, such as the local market or fish market, to the council."

However, he said that the council would not be granted any commercially used land, which would remain under HDC’s management.
