National team flies to Shillong, India for friendly match

Maldives National Football Team has left to Shillong, India to play an international friendly match.

On Wednesday, the Maldives National Football Team will be playing a friendly match against India in Shillong.

The team was divided into two groups, which flew in two flights in two separate routes to the city in India.

The first group left on a flight at 12:50 pm today, where they will first land in Mumbai. Mihaaru reports that the flight itinerary shows that the the team will transit at the Mumbai airport for three hours before taking a domestic flight to Calcutta tonight. They will then fly on to Shillong on Indigo airlines at 9:15 am India time tomorrow.

The second batch has left from Male' to New Delhi on a 2:50 pm flight today, landing in Delhi at 7:30 pm tonight. They will fly on to Calcutta at 11:25 pm tonight, with their flight to Shillong scheduled for 1:40pm India time tomorrow.

The tickets for the national team participating in foreign tournaments is taken by the government. Mihaaru reports that FAM had made bookings for the 23 person squad flying to India to travel together and submitted it to the Sports Ministry in mid-February.

However, when the ministry sent the tickets to FAM this week, the tickets had been issued on two different flights.

Previously, FIFA would reimburse ticket prices for travels of the senior national team for foreign trips.

The friendly match against India is scheduled for 6:30pm Maldivian time on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the team will leave together to return to Maldives, arriving on Friday through the Shillong - Calcutta - Mubai - Maldives route.

The friendly match against India is being played in preparation for the Asian Cup Qualifying match against Philippines, which is scheduled for March 25.
