Telecommunications giant Dhiraagu introduced 5G technology in Maldives on Wednesday, making the cellular data network available in the country for the first time.

The 5G network was unveiled at a ceremony held at Dhiraagu Head Office by its Chairperson Ismail Waheed and Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ismail Rasheed.

The network is currently available in Greater Male' Region encompassing capital city Male', airport island Hulhule', Vilimale' and reclaimed suburb Hulhumale, certain areas of Addu City and Kulhudhuffushi, Haa Dhaalu Atoll.

According to Dhiraagu, the technology will be available to 5G-compatible devices without any extra charges.

In order to compensate for the lack of devices that can support 5G technology available in the market worldwide, Dhiraagu is currently holding discussions with manufacturers in order to arrange the import of 5G-compatible phones and devices into Maldives.

Accordingly, Dhiraagu revealed that the company plans to introduce the most recently released Huawei Mate X into the country at an imminent date.

Chairperson Waheed disclosed that top officials of the company had closely overseen efforts to bring 5G to Maldives. He expressed his delight at Dhiraagu being the first company to introduce 5G technology to Maldives.

"We always work to cater quality services to customers. Accordingly, work on 5G technology was undertaken closely overseen by our board members", said Waheed.

The 5G cellular network speed is 10 times faster than 4G. Currently, 5G technology is available in a few countries worldwide.
