A man has been arrested in connection with splashing engine oil on Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) activist Mariyam Zubair (Mandhi).
Mariyam Zubair, the mother of Galolhu South MP Meekail Naseem, was attacked while riding her motorcycle home after participating in MDP-led protests on 17 March.
According to the Criminal Court’s arrest warrant, police arrested a man accused of driving the motorcycle carrying those responsible for the attack.
Ahmed Rishmah, 20, a resident of Dhaandhoo, was arrested on charges of property damage and intimidation.
While he did not deny driving the motorcycle, he provided police with information about the individual who splashed Mariyam with engine oil.
Rishmah was arrested on Thursday night and has been remanded in custody for 15 days.
Meanwhile, a lawsuit has been filed against Mariyam by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s family over comments she made about his child.
Speaking at an MDP rally, Mariyam claimed the government had banned vapes in Maldives because the president’s eldest son used a vape. The president’s family has denied the allegation.
