Parliamentary representative for the constituency of Kudahuvadhoo, Dhaalu Atoll Ahmed Amir, on Monday, filed an emergency motion to parliament over the alleged negligence involved in the death of a Kandima Maldives' employee.

Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed revealed that the motion was tabled for Tuesday.

The outbreak in Kandima was brought to the attention of authorities after a staff member of the resort, aged 60, was transferred to Kudahuvadhoo Hospital for testing. His death is marked as the 38th COVID-19 related death in Maldives.

According to the family's account of events, Naseer visited the resort's clinic with a fever 10 days before his death and had follow-up consultations with the resident doctor as the symptoms did not respond to medication. It was also noted that Naseer had informed the resort clinic that he was experiencing COVID symptoms such as a reduced sense of smell and taste.

The family of the deceased claims that the resort management refused to make any arrangements for Naseer to leave the island to seek medical treatment despite several requests from Naseer.

Nevertheless, Kandima Maldives has denied all allegations that negligence was involved in the death.

Following the accusations, Mihaaru noted that sources from Kandima revealed that Ministry of Tourism on Tuesday, temporarily revoked the special operating permit granted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moreover, Minister of Tourism Dr Abdulla Mausoom said the ministry will refrain from disclosing any such details with media.

Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC), on Sunday, confirmed that a total of 60 individuals tested positive for COVID-19 at the resort.

The centre's Spokesperson Dr Nazla Rafeeq noted that 44 people were identified as contacts of the 60 that tested positive for the virus.

The virus transmission marked the first outbreak of this magnitude at a tourist resort.
