Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla has today cautioned to refrain from implying that members of parliaments are no more than 'bots'.

The Speaker made this statement in response to a comment made by opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP for South Galolhu Meekail Ahmed Naseem on a motion submitted regarding the banning of entry to Maldives for Israeli passport holders.

Expressing concerns about the delays in passing the ban, Meekail said that the President's Office needs to stop imposing its stances on the parliament agenda through controlling individual members of parliament.

Speaker responded by asking him to not speak in a manner that belittles respect for the parliament.

"Implying that members of parliament are bots takes away from the respect due to MPs," he said.

As ruling People's National Congress holds parliament majority, opposition has always criticized the parliament saying it works only in accordance with the wishes of the government.
