According to the principles followed by Maldives, the sighting of the moon in any Islamic nation is considered valid, even if it is not visible to the country. Saudi Arabia has declared Eid for tomorrow after confirming the moon sighting.
This year, differences emerged among Islamic nations over the Shawwal moon sighting. Astronomical calculations suggested that the moon would not be visible after sunset on the 29th of Ramadan in any country east of the Maldives. As a result, Maldives calendar had marked Eid as Monday, 31 March.
However, former President and astronomer Maumoon Abdul Gayoom stated that the moon would be visible for more than eight minutes after sunset in some Islamic nations, making it likely that Eid would be observed tomorrow.
Former National University Chancellor Dr Hassan Hameed maintained that the moon would not be visible after sunset and that Eid should fall on Monday, as per the calendar.
Islamic Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed had earlier urged the public to refrain from making independent declarations on the moon sighting, warning that it could disrupt harmony.
