Facing long delays in the construction of the new harbour at Haa Dhaalu atoll Kurin'bi, residents have come out and dug up the adjoining T-jetty area.
A resident from the island told Mihaaru News that the area had been dug when harbour construction was first contracted to MTCC in 2022. However, the work remained halted, so some residents had taken it upon themselves to dig up the T-jetty area, effectively connecting the old harbour to the one in progress.
"It is very difficult to dock boats in the harbour during the seasons when we get swell waves. So, in order to allow boats to be moored in the new harbour area, the intervening area has been dug up and cleared," they explained.
Speaking about progress of the new harbour being halted, they said that some of the equipment used in harbour construction had also been taken off the island now.
Kurin'bi Council President Abdulla Aslam said that the delays in harbour construction are due to changes being brought to its design. Aslam said that the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure had informed that changes are being brought to the harbour's concept.
He said that some of the equipment had been transferred to Neykurandhoo as a harbour is being constructed there as well.
"Harbour work here has come to a halt because the Neykurandhoo harbour work is being speeded up," he said.
In a letter sent from the Council to the Construction Ministry in October informed the ministry that a large part of the sea wall of the harbour had been damaged, causing difficulties in embarking and disembarking on the island, with a single set of stairs being in usable condition.
The letter also said that the residents were discontent with having to take boats out of the harbour to unload goods.
Kurin'bi, at present, has two small boats and dinghies.
