President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has declared February 6, Thursday a government holiday.
The day has been declared a holiday as the President is scheduled to deliver the annual Presidential Address at the start of the parliamentary session. This is in accordance with Article 84 of the Maldives Constitution.
The Constitution stipulates that at the beginning of the first session of each year at the first sitting of the parliament, the President shall address the People’s Majlis on the state of the country, and present proposals for improving the state of the country.
Parliament Regulations state that once the President delivers his address, the minority leader of Parliament must prepare and submit a response.
While the new session of parliament is due to begin in the first week of February, two extraordinary sittings are being held ahead of that. The first of these sittings are scheduled for tomorrow.
