MVR 12.7 million has been distributed to individuals on the poverty list as Zakat al-Mal, according to statistics released by Maldives Zakat House last month.
The distribution of Zakat al-Mal began on September 13, with the Ministry of Islamic Affairs reporting the highest per capita distribution this year for the poor and needy.
A total of 3,183 people from Male' and the atolls received Zakat, with each individual receiving MVR 4,000. Last year, beneficiaries recieved MVR 3,500 as Zakat.
The ministry had earlier said that this year's Zakat money is being deposited into the accounts of eligible beneficiaries after reviewing the poverty list from 2021 to date.
In addition, MVR 1.2 million was disbursed for medical treatment to 131 individuals on the poverty register last month.
