Civil Court has ruled FAM to pay a fine of MVR 39,000 to WAMCO over unpaid dues for garbage disposal services. This comes after two rulings against the association last week alone, making this verdict the third.
Maldives Civil Court has fined the Football Association of Maldives MVR 39,000 for failing to pay garbage disposal fees to Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO).
WAMCO filed a lawsuit against FAM, alleging that the association failed to reimburse payment owed for WAMCO's waste clearing services at the Vilimale' Football Stadium.
In the absence of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) at the hearing, the Civil Court issued a verdict on Thursday, ordering the association to pay the fined amount within three working days, by next Wednesday.
This marks the third verdict against FAM within the past week, as the association faces significant financial strain. All three rulings were issued in FAM's absence.
Initially, the association was fined MVR 776,000 and ordered to settle the amount within 30 days starting from last Sunday. This penalty stemmed from a bounced cheque issued to a private enterprise to which the Football Association of Maldives owes money.
On Tuesday, another ruling was handed down against FAM for failing to repay a loan of MVR 308,400, borrowed from another company under an agreement to settle the debt in US dollars. The association was fined USD 20,000, equivalent to the borrowed amount in US dollars, along with an additional MVR 27,000 to cover the hearing costs. Both payments were ordered to be settled within 10 days of the verdict.
Meanwhile, FIFA has entrusted the management of FAM to Acting Secretary General Mohamed Jaushan Shareef, restricting operations to administrative tasks following the conclusion of FAM's last elected Executive Committee's term on Tuesday.
With multiple financial rulings against the association, FIFA has provisionally suspended FAM President Bassam Adeel Jaleel from participating in all football-related activities, both nationally and internationally, for a period of nine months. The suspension stems from charges of money laundering and fraud, for which Bassam faces a case in the Criminal Court.
