Maldives has welcomed 90,000 tourists in the first two weeks of the year.

This is an 8 percent increase from the same period last year, where 83,000 tourist arrivals were recorded.

As per statistics shared by the Ministry of Tourism, 70 percent of tourists that have arrived in Maldives so far this year, a total of 63,4000, are set to stay at resorts. 25,000 tourists are staying at hotels and guesthouses, which comes to 28 percent of total arrivals. The remaining 2,200 tourists are staying on safaris and liveaboards.

While the largest segment of tourists are staying in resorts, 69 percent of total bed capacity in Maldives is held by resorts, with 42,000 out of 61,000 tourism service beds.

Total bed capacity of guesthouses is at 13,000 or 22 percent.

The December/January period sees most tourist arrivals in Maldives come from Europe. This time, the highest number of arrivals is from Russia, with Italy following close behind. The third highest source market is the UK. China, which led the list last year, is at fourth rank.

The government aims to welcome 2.2 million tourists within the year.
