Criminal Court has sentenced a man convicted of drug trafficking to a life sentence as well as levying an MVR 1 million fine. Approximately MVR 400,000 found in his possession is also to be seized by the State.

The sentence was passed on Ismail Shareef of M. Yamyamge.

Charges were raised against him after he was arrested in 2019 in Male' for selling drugs, and a search of his apartment was conducted, where drugs had been found. 125.8g of cannabis was found in a kitchen cupboard, leading to drug trafficking charges.

Police also found MVR 442,900 in cash in the apartment. As Shareef was unable to explain how he came in possession of the money, the State accused it was the proceeds of drug sales and appealed to the Court to allow the State to seize it.

In Sunday's hearing, the Court ruled that the evidence submitted against Shareef sufficiently proves his guilt beyond doubt.

He was sentenced to 25 years in prison and fined by MVR 1 million, which must be paid to Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) within a year. The Court also ruled that the MVR 442,900 found in his apartment will be seized by the State.
