MIOT Hospital, a multispecialty facility in Chennai, India, has held a meeting with doctors in the Maldives during its “Connect MIOT” event.
The session aimed to introduce Maldivian health workers to the hospital’s genicular artery embolization treatment and foster collaboration.
During the event, MIOT shared information and case studies on the treatment, followed by a Q&A session for doctors to obtain more information about the procedure.
Genicular artery embolization is a minimally invasive alternative to joint replacement for patients with knee osteoarthritis. The procedure uses interventional radiology to block specific blood vessels transmitting pain to the knee joint. It is performed under anesthesia, and patients experience pain relief within approximately two days, regaining mobility without pain for two to three years, the hospital said.
The treatment has been successfully practiced for two years and is particularly beneficial for elderly patients and those unable to undergo surgery due to complications such as diabetes or obesity.
Dr Prithvi Mohandas, Managing Director of MIOT Hospital, highlighted the importance of sharing knowledge with Maldivian doctors. He expressed the hospital's willingness to facilitate the introduction of genicular artery embolization in the Maldives, where knee arthritis is prevalent.
“Only a cath lab is required to begin this service, and such facilities are already available in Maldivian hospitals,” said Dr Prithvi.
He added that MIOT is ready to provide training for doctors in Maldives to perform the procedure and is committed to strengthening healthcare services in the Maldives.
"MIOT not only treats patients but also trains doctors. We equip them to introduce our services in different parts of the world and even station our medical teams in some countries," said Dr Prithvi.
Dr Prithvi added that several Maldivian patients have already underwent the procedure at MIOT hospital.
MIOT Hospital has been a key partner in developing healthcare services in the Maldives, providing support to IGMH. Aasandha coverage is available at MIOT hospital.
