Parliament's Judiciary Committee today approved a recommendation to dismiss four of the five members of the Tax Appeal Tribunal to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and to forward their cases to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for investigation.

The motion was passed unanimously during the committee's meeting.

The members proposed for removal from the Tax Appeal Tribunal are:

1. President - Mohamed Munawwar Ali

2. Vice President - Hussain Zaidhaan Jaleel

3. Member - Ahmed Ashraf

4. Member - Khadheeja Naeem

During the committee meeting today, Hulhudhoo MP Abdul Sattar Mohamed stated that only one tribunal member, Ismail Sajid, is not proposed for dismissal. He said that Sajid's removal is not recommended due to his good intentions in bringing the matter to the committee's attention.

"Daring to bring up issues in such an institution is indicative of good intentions. Our decision on this matter will prevent such issues from arising and reaching us," MP Sattar said.

The committee, in collaboration with the Tax Appeal Tribunal, has been conducting a confidential investigation. The committee met with individual members of the Tax Appeal Tribunal Office and Registrar Abdulla Hilmy.

MP Sattar highlighted that the committee discovered specific procedural methods employed by the Tax Appeal Tribunal in deciding cases.

Committee proposed:

- An investigation into allegations of abuse of position and unjust enrichment of some tribunal members to be submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC)

- A proposal to reduce the financial burden on the state by addressing the Tribunal office's use of a space larger than necessary

- A recommendation to amend regulations regarding the appointment powers of the President over the Tribunal bench and its president.

The committee unanimously approved all three recommendations.
