Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has said that at present, there are over 400 online businesses in Maldives, stressing that the government will make efforts to provide them with the online access that they require.

Speaking at the launching of the Strategy and Fund for Creative Economy, the Minister said that if these online creators of Maldives are provided space on global online platforms, then it would contribute towards further expanding these businesses. He assured that the government would work towards facilitating making revenue through Google, Amazon, YouTube and other such platforms.

He said that this is the aim behind working on introduction of PayPal services in Maldives as well.

"We are hoping that in the near future PayPal will allow for cross-border transactions. That is a day that the President wants to see. I speak of this repeatedly as this is something you, creative youth, those who engage in online businesses in Maldives, eagerly look forward to," Saeed said.

During last night's ceremony, eight strategies and seventy eight vows towards establishing a creative economy were introduced, as well as having set up a creative fund.

Business Centre Corporation (BCC) said that this fund would offer financial assistance between MVR 50,000 and MVR 300,000 to Maldivian inventors and creators.

Saeed highlighted that even at present, there are many creative productions in the country that can be sold to foreign markets as well. He said that such creators are in need of space in these markets, assuring that the Economic Ministry is making efforts to facilitate this.

"It is that our population is small. Even then, once this access is granted to Maldivian creators, a digital economy of creative economy will be formed. There is space for this. This is possible," he said.

Saeed said that even under the Free Trade Agreement with China, local products can be easily exported to China. The FTA will be in effect from January next year.

The Minister said that in the future, a patent and copyright act would also be enacted, offering further protection to creatives.
