Heavy rains result in flooding and damage across the country

In the ongoing heavy rains and thunderstorms, some islands have fared worse than others, with extensive flooding and damage caused to many residences.

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said that southern, central and northern islands have reported damages due to rain.

NDMA is currently working on extending assistance to those affected in the rains through surveying damage. They are also providing temporary shelter and food to affected persons in collaboration with island councils.

Some islands that suffered damage through heavy rains

- Dhaalu atoll Bandidhoo

NDMA said that in strong gusts of wind, the roof of one house was blown away, resulting in damage to the kitchen and appliances in it. The seven residents of the house have been moved to temporary shelter as fixing the roof would take time.

In the same squall, part of the roof of another house on the island was also blown away. Work is ongoing to repair the damage.

Roads on the island are flooded, and a number of trees also became uprooted.

- Lhaviyani atoll Kurendhoo

NDMA said that the streets of Kurendhoo are entirely tired, with efforts now being made through the use of pumps and water tracks in the streets to drain the flood water.

About 70 houses in Kurendhoo reported flood water leaking into their premises. Hence, NDMA is surveying the extent of damages caused through this as well.

- Feydhoo, Addu City

NDMA said that the roof of one house in Feydhoo was damaged, causing water to leak in. This then led to the ceiling collapsing. NDMA said that repairs of the roof have been conducted.

Streets of capital Male' City, too, saw heavy flooding yesterday. NDMA said that they are stacking sandbags at affected houses to prevent flood water from leaking into residences.

MET Office has predicted similar weather conditions for the rest of the week as well. Even at present, a White Alert is issued from Raa atoll to Laamu atoll, and a Yellow Alert from Baa atoll to Alif Dhaalu atoll.
