Maldives Customs Service has intercepted an attempt to illegally export shark and ray meat out of the country.
A customs official told Mihaaru that 582 kg of shark and ray meat were found during a search of a shipment following a tip-off that it was exporting prohibited items under the International Trade in Endangered Species Act.
The official said the items were being exported last month as salted fish. But, after further testing by the Marine Research Center, it was confirmed that it was shark and ray meat, they said.
As such, Customs destroyed the items on Tuesday.
It is unclear which company was trying to export these items.
Sharks and ray species are prohibited from being caught, used and exported under the general fisheries regulations of Maldives.
