Akuru Type, in collaboration with the Maumoon Foundation, will officially launch the "Maumoon" font at a ceremony scheduled for Friday night. The event will take place at the Art Gallery on Boduthakurufaanu Magu, with Maumoon himself attending.
A digital font replicating the handwriting of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is set to be released.
The font was designed by Abdulla Shafiu (Abo), a well-known designer of modern Thaana fonts. He is also the type director of "Akuru Type," a platform that provides modern fonts on a single platform.
Akuru Type, in collaboration with the Maumoon Foundation, will officially launch the "Maumoon" font at a ceremony scheduled for Friday night. The event will take place at the Art Gallery on Boduthakurufaanu Magu, with Maumoon himself attending.
Following the launch, an exhibition showcasing the Maumoon font will be held at the Art Gallery on Saturday. The font will be made available for download on the Akuru Type platform after its official unveiling on Friday.
Shafiu said that he analyzed numerous samples of Maumoon’s handwriting to develop the font. His research focused on the former president’s writing style in the Thaana script, selecting the most consistent characters to create a modern yet authentic font.
"The selection of the characters has focused on the most commonly used, consistent characters written by the former president while ensuring the font retains Maumoon's distinct writing style," Shafiu said.
He tested the characters in various sentences before finalizing the digitized version. During a meeting with Maumoon, some modifications were made to the font, incorporating the former president’s suggestions and additional letters.
Akuru Type, which was launched last year, hosts a variety of modern Thaana fonts created by different artists. The platform currently offers over twenty fonts for purchase.
The Dhivehi Type Foundry operated under Shafiu’s creative company, "Ankria," has developed ten fonts so far.
