The government is working on renovating the Kooddoo Airport after State airline Maldivian halted flights to the island.

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen said in a post on social media X that Maldivian had made the decision to halt flights to Kooddoo after the airport maintenance had remained unattended to for a long period of time, with the condition of the runway causing damage to two of the airline's planes.

Hence, the Ministry, together with Civil Aviation Authority and the Kooddoo Airport operator, have commenced efforts to repair and restore the airport to a better condition, he said.

He expressed confidence that renovation work will be completed soon, resulting in the resumption of flights.

Island Aviation Deputy Managing Director Ali Saleem has also earlier confirmed that flights had been stopped due to the deteriorating condition of the Kooddoo Airport's runway and apron. He said then that this had caused damaged to two of their flights, and there stands a risk that continuing flights may cause harm to their fleet, as well as passengers.

He said that flights would be resumed as soon as the issues are resolved.

Kooddoo Airport was initially opened in 2012. In 2017, the airport was reopened after expanding the runway to accommodate larger flights and jets.
