STELCO staff honoured with 'Medal of Bravery' for stopping transformer thief

Ahmed sustained injuries near his eye and mouth while attempting to stop the thieves.

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has awarded a 'Medal of Bravery' to an employee who "narrowly escaped permanent disability or even death after being struck with a large wrench" while trying to prevent a transformer theft.

The incident took place around 09:30 pm last night. The transformer break-in was flagged after the thief cut one of the cables which supplied electricity to the MPL flats in Hulhumalé.

According to STELCO's Managing Director Hussain Fahumy, the staff member attended the transformer site when the power went out, and witnessed the thieves in action. When he attempted to stop them, they attacked him with a wrench, Fahumy said.

The employee, identified as Ahmed, sustained injuries to his head and mouth in the assault.

In a social media post, STELCO said that it honoured the employees affected by incident with the Medla of Bravery, and acknowledged their "exceptional courage and commitment in the safe of significant risk to their lives and well-being while performing their duties."

"The company reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the safety and security of its workforce, emphasising that such matters will be addressed with the highest level of seriousness and diligence," the company also wrote.

While the medal of bravery was awarded to Ahmed, the employee who was injured, another employee was also presented with a certificate.

Since the incident, Maldives Police Service has apprehended one individual on suspicion of committing the crime.
