Fenaka Corporation has identified 35 islands that are experiencing very poor electricity conditions, with rapid power outages and issues with electricity generation unable to meet consumption needs, especially during hot weather.

Mohamed AbdulKareem (Rukuma), the Deputy Managing Director of Fenaka, speaking with Mihaaru News on Wednesday said that these islands face significant challenges, with over 30 of them requiring repairs before the start of Ramadan.

As part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's pledge to address power outages, these islands will be given priority for improvements ahead of Ramadan. During his visit to islands in Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls last week President Muizzu assured residents of Fiyoari that changes would be made to improve electricity supply before Ramadan.

Despite the significant investments made last year to address the problem, he acknowledged that a permanent solution had not yet been reached.

“In collaboration with companies like Fenaka, STELCO and MTCC, we are aiming to bring and install the generators in all the islands across the country, facing this problem,” President Muizzu said.

AbdulKareem said that the islands with large populations are among those that require urgent electricity upgrades. However, details on the cost of improving the electricity supply across these islands are yet to be finalized.
