Maldives Polcie Service said the agency seized 103 boxes from a private office in Henveiru Hulhugali after searching the premises based on a tip off that cigarettes were being manufactured at the location.

Police raided the private office established within a residential house early last night under a search warrant.

A total of 103 cardboard boxes were seized from the location, police said today, adding that comes of the boxes contained tobacco.

Under the Tobacco Control Act, manufacturing tobacco is prohibited in Maldives.

The Health Ministry previously asked Customs to seize any imported products that could be used to manufacture tobacco.

This follows the recent amendment to the Tobacco Control Act last November to ban the import and use of vapes.

The Tobacco Control Act defines "tobacco products" as tobacco, tobacco stems, nicotine and products containing them. The Act also provides that any substance containing any of these substances in any quantity, whether inhaled or ingested, smelled or pasted on a body part or applied, rubbed and prepared in such a manner as to reach the body, is a tobacco product.

Tobacco "manufacture" means the air, sun or heat drying tobacco or preparing the fresh leaves of tobacco in any forms for use in the manufacture of tobacco.
