Parliament has today approved Mohamed Abdulla (Muhamma) and Aminath Sarahath Izzath as members of the Broadcasting Commission of Maldives.

With the terms of two members of Broadcom coming to an end in December, 12 persons applied for the posts.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu prioritized the list by preference and forwarded it to parliament. Mohamed, who was the former MP for Ihavandhoo, and President's Office Spokesperson during former President Abdulla Yameen's administration, Ibrahim Muaz Ali, were on the top of the President's list.

However, the list produced by the committee after review and interviews had Mohamed's name slide down to number three. Sarahath was on top of the list, followed by journalist Shifza Mustafa as the second name.

Votes were taken on nominees as per their order on the list in the extraordinary sitting held in parliament today.

In the vote, Sarahath received approval with 68 unanimous votes.

Shifza received only 11 votes in favour. Voting against her were 50 members of ruling People's National Congress.

Mohamed received approval through 58 votes, with 2 votes against.

As Mohamed and Sarahath received approval, voting was not held for the fourth name on the list, that of journalist Shimla Ahmed.
