Speaking at the 7th International Teachers' Conference held at the Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), the minister highlighted the government's efforts to strengthen the education sector and boost enrollment in higher education.
The number of students pursuing A-level studies this year has increased by 70 percent compared to previous years, Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafeeu said today.
Earlier, concerns had been raised by education professionals about the declining number of students studying A levels in recent years.
Speaking at the 7th International Teachers' Conference held at the Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), the minister highlighted the government's efforts to strengthen the education sector and boost enrollment in higher education.
“The number of students entering grade 11 in government schools in 2024 has increased by 70 percent compared to 2023,” Minister Shafeeu said.
He said that this surge in A level enrollment will contribute to a larger number of students progressing to university studies, strengthening the education system and fostering a new generation of youth fueling national productivity.
The government has taken significant steps to increase A level enrollment, including the reopening of the CHSE building, a prominent A level centre in Male' City.
A level programs will also be introduced in 23 additional schools, with students allowed to pursue studies even if they pass just one subject.
