The Democrats are preparing to host a series of "open debates" on various issues.

According to the party's National Assembly member Saif Fathih, public opinion should be considered when addressing matters concerning governance. As a result, the party has decided to hold debates to discuss these issues.

The first event in the open debate series is scheduled for next Friday, with the topic titled, "When Did Democracy Take a U-Turn?"

However, the venue has yet to be finalized, Saif said.

He emphasized that anyone is welcome to participate and engage in the discussion.

The concept of open debates dates back to the reform agenda introduced by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s government. During that period, political forums, including the "Open Debate" series, gained popularity, often held in schools and public halls.

However, as the debates grew more intense, the series was discontinued during the final term of Maumoon’s administration.

Despite this, political gatherings continued under different names, with invitations sent out for such events.
