A palm tree that was grown on British Ambassador Caron Röhsler's house terrace has been planted in Hulhumalé today.

After completing a five-year term at the British High Commission in the Maldives, Caron is now preparing to return to her country.

Before her departure, the tree was planted in Hulhumalé Central Park during a farewell event organized by HDC staff today.

According to HDC, the tree was planted to honor Caron's service as High Commissioner.

Caron said this palm grew from a coconut sprout she received as a gift in 2021. The coconut was gifted to her by Ahmed Fizal, who previously served as the Climate Change Policy Manager at the British High Commission.

Fizal told "Mihaaru" that the coconut sprout was brought from his mother's island, B. Hithadhoo.

He also participated in the event held to plant the tree in Hulhumalé Central Park.

Caron has also named the palm tree. The name is "Shai."

"There are two things that lessen the sadness of having to leave the Maldives; the British High Commission in the Maldives and this palm tree named 'Shai'," Caron said in a post on X.

Caron has also shared photos showing the tree's growth at different stages.

Caron assumed the position of British Ambassador to the Maldives on October 30, 2019. She was the first ambassador to open a British Embassy in the Maldives and serve as resident ambassador. Previously, the UK appointed a single ambassador to cover both the Maldives and Sri Lanka, with the ambassador based in Sri Lanka.
