Tourism went down in February with a dramatic drop in the number of tourists from China, according to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism.
The ministry’s report shows that tourist arrivals from China, the largest tourism market of the Maldives, numbered only 24,263 last month which is a decrease of 29 percent from February 2016.
Statistics also show that the number of tourists from the main European markets of the United Kingdom and Germany also dropped by two and four percent respectively. However, tourists from Italy had spiked by 21 percent.
The total number of tourists to the Maldives last month was 121,052, an increase of 0.3 percent compared to February last year.
There are 126 resorts and 416 guesthouses in operation in the Maldives as of February with total 37,000 beds including hotels and safari cruises. The amount is 12 percent higher than last year’s record. However, statistics indicate that occupancy rates dropped by 10 percent in resorts and two percent in guesthouses last month.
