Tourism spikes in Jan as China market begins to revive

Tourist arrivals to the Maldives spiked by 15 percent last January, mainly due to a 32 percent increase in tourists arriving from the archipelago’s main tourism market of China.

According to the official statistics publicised by the Ministry of Tourism on Thursday, the total number of tourists to the Maldives in January was 125,336, compared to the 108,396 that arrived in January last year.

The peak tourism season of the Maldives is during winter in the Northern Hemisphere, mainly between November to February or March.

The statistics show that the highest number of tourists in January hailed from China with 30,669 visitors, followed by Germany and the United Kingdom respectively.

The average period of stay also increased to 5.7 days, while the occupancy rate was at 81.2 percent which is a spike of 5.8 percent from January 2016.

Tourism Ministry’s statistics show that the total number of beds in the Maldives’ tourism sector amounted to 37,516 by the end of January, Moreover, 12 new resorts were unveiled over the past year.
