Maldives Qualifications Authority (MQA) has decided a significant policy change that will require students at higher education institutions to achieve a 50 percent pass rate in all examinations to pass their courses.

This decision comes in response to rising concerns about academic integrity, particularly regarding the hiring of individuals to complete assignments on behalf of students.

In an interview with state media PSM, MQA CEO Fizana Rasheed highlighted the increasing issue of students outsourcing their assignments, a problem frequently reported to the authority.

To counter this practice, the MQA has mandated that students must achieve at least a 50 percent pass rate in their exams to successfully complete a course.

The decision was made after discussions with heads of higher education institutions, and it will be made public soon, she added.

Higher Education Act, which came into effect in 2021, imposes fines on both students who hire others to complete their coursework and those who offer such services.

Students face a fine of MVR 5,000, while service providers can be fined MVR 10,000. However, despite these provisions, no actions have been taken against any offenders to date.

The Act also calls for educational institutions to establish strong monitoring systems to prevent such practices, enabling them to take action beyond imposing fines.
