Judges Mohamed Faisal and Mohamed Niyaz have submitted their nominations for the position of Chief Justice of High Court.

The vacancy arose after High Court Justice Hussain Shaheed was appointed as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) had opened the nomination process, and when the deadline closed on March 29, only Faisal and Niyaz had applied.

Judge Niyaz, who currently oversees the High Court, also serves as the Vice-Chairperson of the JSC and is one of the judges appointed to the commission’s board to represent High Court.

Both judges have been serving on the High Court since 2018.

Judge Shaheed’s appointment to the Supreme Court followed the resignation of former Supreme Court Judge Husnu Suood, who stepped down after his suspension.

In addition to Suood, Judges Dr Azmiralda Zahir and Mahaz Ali Zahir were also suspended while the Supreme Court was reviewing a petition challenging a constitutional amendment that could result in MPs losing their seats if they switch parties.
